Hello everyone. I am very very new to stamps as I mostly collect older sportscards and have for years. I currently serve in the military and have 3 grown children. My mother in law pulled out a big box this Christmas which is her stamp collection and wanted to pass it down to me as I love to collect. If I am not careful I would collect everything...LOL. Anyway she started collecting stamps in the 1940's and gave me more stamps than I could ever imagine. I wanted to share this with you all and hope to post pictures soon, but being new to this site I have to learn my way around the navigational beacons. Anyway so glad to be here and hope to learn a lot. Most the stamps are US but there are albums from all over the world as well as she was a school teacher in Turkey in the 1960's teaching English.

Sorry to ramble. Again thank you for having me a part of this forum and hope to meet many collectors.

rogdcam thank you so much for the welcome. I have so many questions for sure as I really don't know where to start. I was very pleased to look as most of the stamps but haven't even gotten through half and being a card collector I am trying to be very very careful when handling these. I keep most my sportscards in binders except for the ones I had graded. From what I have seen the newest of stamps were the mint sets she had in 1978. These were the ones that came in a folder (again I have to get pictures). Some of the stamps were apparently from her father who collected in the early 1900's so I have a long ways to go in identifying these. I know that I would love to find pages and keep these for display. I want to catalog the entire collection and from this amount it could take well over a year.

blackie,

Hopefully your "collecting gene" passes on to your children and thay can look forward to being the next generation to add to the stamp (and other) collections. My son is career Army but looking forward to the day he can get back to his collecting hobbies as well. His oldest son now 14 calls my stamps "stickers" so I have a little work to do

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences. Russ

Welcome Blackie.

As a fellow new member to these boards, I can say you will find yourself amazed at the willingness of so many experienced collectors to help those of us who are newer to the boards and the hobby.

Thank you all so much. I will start trying to upload photos and see how I can start categorizing this collection. A few of the stamps were wrapped in old folded paper and tucked away. Pretty exciting to see this and am so very grateful for my mother in law keeping these.

Welcome to these boards. Also fairly new here. If you run into any trouble knowing from what country a stamp is from, the whole world collectors on these boards are likely to tell you it with one glance. So, no point to get staked with that. And if you find any really difficult ones, it is all the more fun to figure out what it is. After you know what country a stamp is from, finding more information becomes much easier.
