It's possible that the colour shift towards yellow was caused by oxidation. Some of the inks used on earlier stamps exhibit this depending on how they were stored.
Ancient inks are quite easily oxidized. This looks like the case. I've also heard that some album pages are more acidic than others and can accelerate the effect.
