I added this hand painted 'tiny' cover (just falls under my 'tiny' cover criteria at 3.5" x 2.5") recently.

I am intrigued by the artwork, was this racist content that someone later added the blob to cover it up? What does the writer mean by 'they got me doing it'? What is the point of the 'Please do not smoke this' notation and smoking pipe on back?
Anyone have any opinions on this?
Don

The baby's head resembles the bowl of a pipe. I am missing/not understanding where the racist part is.

Ah, I see that now. I thought perhaps the baby originally was black faced...

I am still curious about the pipe references..

Nice piece Don
Original artwork neatly painted/drawn by a fairly talented lay artist. I think the meaning is between the two, I.e. The sender and recipient and appears to be an "inside" joke. Neat piece, my father in law was born in Scranton in 1928, and he would regale us with stories of growing up in that city. That cover brought him to mind. Thanks!
Regards mark

As a child, I dreaded the Christmas Day trip to my grandmother's house. All of the adult in-laws who would be there smoked. My parents did not.

Now I see that ! I thought it was a black blob.

Strange that Charlie Martin's note, does not match the crude addressing script on the envelope.

I think Charlie Martin let his kid address the envelope what with the do-overs and mixed script.

Maybe an early anti-smoking themed cover by someone against smoking, when there is a baby around? Not to love smoking more than the baby. Just a thought as it does not appear racist.

Address appears to be written in an unsteady hand indicating probably an elderly or child's hand. Since the Wilmington town name is misspelled, I would guess it would be Charlie Martin's son or daughter.

Of course there is no racial content. It is purely an anti-smoking message with the pipe being the focus. Most fundamental Christian religions see smoking tobacco as sinful to one degree or another and this cover appears to be from a pious adherent to one of these Christian religions and is admonishing the recipient to not grow weak and give in to this sin.
