I was looking over some lots in the Levy auction on the 15th and noticed this pair of 1¢ Franklins. Lot 25 description; "1851, 1¢ blue, type II (Scott 7), positions 1R1E-2R1E, top left corner margin horizontal pair, fresh duo with bright color and sharp detail; lightly cancelled, Very Fine, an attractive position piece. Scott $285" https://stampauctionnetwork.com/V/v7654.cfmNot I get it that it's a great positional piece but is it me or is there a giant crease running right through Ben's nose on the right stamp?  |

Siegel called it out when they old it: Quote:
1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Positions 1-2R1E, horizontal pair with large top left corner sheet margins, other sides full to ample, bright Plate 1 Early color, light strikes of grid cancel and small trace of manuscript in left margin, right stamp vertical crease, Very Fine appearance, as Neinken states in his book on p. 61, "For both of these positions [1R1E and 2R1E], the Type I relief was first used, then both positions were erased. A poor job of burnishing was done, and strong traces of both original entries remained when the "T" relief (roll No. 1) was used to finally enter them." |

Quite a few nice pieces in this sale and I love this pair. The image they provide on SAN isn't horrible but it's not stellar either so even if it's visual I think it should be mentioned for transparency. |

It should certainly have been mentioned. It really is not even a "very fine pair"; the left stamp is very fine but the right is damaged; it should be described that way. |

I called Kelleher last week to tell them about the omission of the crease in their description of this pair. I had to leave a message with a senior VP, and he never called me back. I wasn't surprised - that seems to be part of the business of philately; pretend you don't know anything. |

I just noticed lot 23, listed as #7 6L1E isn't even a #7.
It is a #9 recut twice at bottom.
Maybe they had a sale announcement, I didn't listen. |

It is quite striking to compare the sold prices today with the previous sales results for the same items when purchased from Siegel and/or Spink. A few equaled or exceeded but the vast majority went for much less. The owner or heirs are taking a bath. |

It may all be part of the process of becoming a curmudgeon (I'm not yelling at clouds...yet), but the way Kelleher calls their auctions, somewhere between 'wise guy' and 'trying to be clever/amusing,' is starting to really irritate me. |
