How about "POINTE à PITRE GUAD," i.e., Guadeloupe?

Yes, that seems right. Looks like a Paquebot anglais cancel - so "PAQ. ANG." at the top. Regular Point a Pitre cancel would be "GUADELOUPE" at the top, and just "POINT A PITRE" at the bottom.

Interesting! Thanks, Greg. I couldn't read the top line and a Paquebot cancel never occurred to me. My copy of Gibbons says that a British Packet Agency was established on Guadeloupe in 1848 and continued to operate till 1874. I make the date on my OP as 1873, so your idea looked good. I searched on line and found this link, showing the exact cancel on my stamp. You nailed it!

Indeed. Made me glad after all that my stamp was French Colonies rather than from the issue for the Métropole (which is what I thought it was when I bought it). Thanks again for your help.
