France, Type Blanc: What Sort Of Cancellation Is This?

Nearest I could find is "Jour de l'an" but all examples look somewhat different.

Looks like a stamp used on a newspaper, appied to the newsprint, with the ink-stamp then carrying on beyond the stamp onto the journal.

I agree with geoff - it is not a cancel but just part of newsprint. Examples of this have been shown here several times

I do not know what you are asking, but these stamps were sometimes affixed before printing, hence the printing on the stamp

So the purpose of the stamp was to pay the subsequently printed paper's eventual passage through the post? I don't doubt that you're right, but in that case, shouldn't the stamp have been one of those "pour imprimés"?

If you mean precancelled stamps, aside from an extremely expensive group that appeared in 1893, they weren't used until 1920.

And, now that I know what I'm looking at, I find that the Y&T Spécialisé, Tome I, has in its chapter "Timbres pour journaux" a very nice section on precisely this sort of cancellation, called "Annulation typographique," accompanied by at least one very suitable picture. The following lines are especially relevant: "Les timbres ayant servi à l'affranchissement des journaux de 1870 à 1908 ne sont donc pas, pour la plupart, oblitérés avec un cachet postal, mais couverts de caractères d'imprimerie; c'était, ainsi, une sorte de préoblitération." In English: "Stamps, having served for the franking of newspapers from 1870 to 1908, were not, for the most part, cancelled with a postal device but covered with printer's type. This was thus a sort of pre-cancel."
