Actually, since they were line perforated I'd expect tall, short, wide and narrow stamps anywhere on the sheet, since perforations placement was up to the operator. It wasn't until many years later when they started using comb and harrow perfs that the sizes got much closer to standard. Tall, short, wide and narrow are fairly uncommon with the penny stars, but that was just due to the skill of the operators (and likely the OCD of the inspectors).

I have never come across a wide and narrow range of a 1d red, although there are varieties of the long at the top or long at the bottom, also short at the top or short at the bottom examples that have been found.

If a wide or narrow range exists billsey, perhaps you could show or give me an example of such a rare perforation variety. WM

I'm afraid my GB isn't well enough organized to show varieties like that. I have the basic collection with the common perforated issues and a more advanced one with plate varieties with my initials, it's mostly in glassines and 102 cards. :)

Are you saying that wide and narrow perforations exist on 1d red stars ?

Or is that just a figment of your imagination ?

Wildling mad.

If you are a Penny Red fan, I see that the auction site Brixton Chrome has a bunch of them on their auction tomorrow night (Wednesday). Prices seem really low, at the moment anyway. Auction closes Wednesday at 10:30 Toronto time.

I buy a lot there from Chris and have never been disappointed. You can find it here. Pages 5 to 8 are all Penny Reds!!

Or you can click at the top of this page where he always seems to advertise.
