Morse Code And Keypunch Tape On Stamps

Thank you, 22crows again for your very accurate information!! I am learning about telegraph communications more (which I didn't know at all!), and finding some equipment or scenes of usage in old films and drama set in those era. I have to visit Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications (https://pkporthcurno.com/discover-pk/our-story/) to see the real equipments used and touch them.


Here is another centenary of communications, showing the change of methods in the times;

Another one featuring classic Morse Key, also shows the cable connection to a distance location. That was a parallel development, to lay cables on the ocean floor and some specialist ships were built for those challenging tasks.

The picture of the machine you referred, "The Hughes telegraph, was the first telegraph printing text on a paper tape; this one was manufactured by Siemens and Halske, Germany (Warsaw Muzeum Techniki)".

This IS the connection between those key devices and printed tapes, which are all on the first stamp of this thread!! I am sooooo glad that you had posted this, Rod

Electric signals gone through cables or radio (symbolically/metaphorically pictured in the air, in the stamp below) were read promptly or printed on tapes.

Just happened to run into the film "Young Tom Edison" the other night. Morse Code played a very important part in it, too! Not sure how much of it was "artistic license" but it had to do with warning a passenger train that a bridge was out via Morse Code using a locomotive's steam whistle!

Oh, I know all about the RAILROAD'S codes for whistles... I'm a railfan! ;-)

But in the movie Edison was transmitting MORSE to his sister who understood the codes. He was "telegraphing" that the upcoming bridge was out, and using her personal call sign.

Hi Nells250 - an interesting detail of history! I have to watch the film. I guess there were many people who owned the skill of Morse code in the time, kept used for emergency occasions until the equipments are all disappeared. I watch a recent Norwegian drama named "State of Happiness", they showed that Morse code communication was still used by ex fishing company owner, an oil industry partner in 1970s. The code was received by a senior secretary of this oil digging partner, who also remember the code from the past. Symbol of rapid changes, and skills of people which had been supporting the local society.

Morse code sent by train whistles - that made me remember these stamps below. I guess they are not Morse, but just location signals for ships in darkness? Or were those lighthouse capable to send message?

Flying tape (in the SG catalogue it says Computer Tape) in shape of 8...? Looks like 8 was not correct, if so maybe in shape of infinity?
