North Macedonia 2019 The Great Mother of Tumba Madzari
Tumba Madzari is an archaeological site in Skopje valley. Multiple stages of settlement took place here between 6000 and 4300 BC. The land was used mostly for farming by the Anzabegovo-Vršnik cultural group who lived in small-scale communities. The discovery of Pre-Indo-European sculpture of the Great Mother suggests the practice of religion as part of the culture.

North Macedonia 1998 Archaeological Findings II
This stamp set features pottery found in Neolithic sites in North Macedonia, including a Great Mother figurine.

Serbia 2008 100 Years of the First Systematic Archaeological Excavations
Vinca is a Neolithic culture in Southeast Europe, dated to between 5700 and 4500 BC. It is characterized by large tell settlements, anthropomorphic figurines, and Vinca symbols. The Vinca figurines with a variety of styles may be for ritual purposes. The Vinca symbols may be the earliest form of writing.

Serbia 2019 Personalities
Miloje Vasic (1869-1956) was a Serbian archaeologist who discovered Vinca-Belo Brdo, the type site for the Vinca culture in 1905. He also led systematic excavations of the site which began in 1908.

Kosovo 2015 Archaeology
This stamp also depicts Vinca clay tablet and Vinca figurines.

Serbia 2021 Dragoslav Srejovic
Dragoslav Srejovic (1931-1996) was a Serbian archaeologist who explored Lepenski Vir, a site of the Mesolithic Iron Gates culture of the Balkans. The site comprises one large settlement with around ten satellite villages. The Lepenski Vir sculptures consist of numerous figurines carved from round sandstone cobbles dating to 7000 BC.

This stamp depicts the well-known Lepenski Vir stone figurine named Foremother.

Serbia and Montenegro 2003 Philatelica Danubiana
This stamp set shows Lepenski Vir stone sculptures of the fish God of the Danube.

Moldova 2011 Museum of Archaeology and History of Moldova
Cucuteni-Trypillia is a Neolithic–Chalcolithic culture (ca. 5500 to 2750 BC) of Eastern Europe. It includes Linear Pottery culture, a major archaeological horizon flourished between ca. 5500 and 4500 BC. The stamp set features pottery artifacts: an anthropomorphic amphora with lid, a biconical vessel with zoomorphic designs, and a biconical vessel with anthropomorphic designs.

Moldova 2010 Archaeology Exposition - The Lost World of Europe, The Danube Valley
These stamps depict shell necklace, boar tusk pendant, and coral bead circlets from Suvorovo-Novodanilovka site, Giurgiulesti (4500 - 4300 BC).

Tassili n'Ajjer, Algeria (V)

In 1982, the UNESCO declared Tassili n'Ajjer as world heritage. To publicize it, Algeria issued on October 20, 1983, a set of four stamps, one of them shows stone paintings. The Arabic inscription reads "Tassili n'Ajjer World Heritage":


France issued on October 25, 1993 one stamp for use by UNESCO office publicizing Tassili n'Ajjer as World Heritage site:

Romania 2011 Romanian Caves
Muierii Cave is located on the Southern edge of Parang Mountain, in the Baia de Fier commune. Remains of many cave bears as well as three humans were discovered here. The human remains are dated to ca. 28,000 BC and are classified as Early European modern humans (EEMH) or Cro-Magnons. However, their bones exhibit a mixture of modern human and Neanderthal features.

Slovenia 2007 Archaeological Finds in Slovenia
Divje Babe flute is a cave bear femur pierced by spaced holes. It was discovered at the Divje Babe archaeological Park near Cerkno. This artifact has been associated with the Neanderthals at ca. 53,000 BC.

Poland 1966 Archaeology
Stroke-ornamented Ware culture flourished between ca. 4900 and 4400 BC. It centered on Silesia in Poland, eastern Germany, and the northern Czech Republic. This clay ram statuette, with the characteristic band decorative pattern, was discovered in the Jordanów Slaaski village in Lower Silesia Province.

Biskupin is an archaeological site and a life-size model of an Iron Age fortified settlement in north-central Poland. It belongs to the Lusatian culture and is dated between 750 and 500 BC. It consists a tall wooden wall which encloses around 100 identical wooden houses laid out on a rectangular grid. The current life-size model was built after WWII.

DDR (Germany) 1970 State Museum of Prehistory Halle
This double cone shaped clay drum found in Leuna-Rössen, Merseburg belongs to a late Neolithic culture, perhaps Bernburg Culture (ca. 3100 to 2700 BC), in the modern Saxony-Anhalt area. It could be used as a musical instrument or a beaker for libation ceremony.

DDR (Germany) 1976 Archaeological Findings
10pf: Clay vessels: funnel beaker and corded ware (ca. 3000 BC)
20pf: Votive chariots for collecting rainwater from the Peccatel tumulus, Mecklembourg, Germany (ca. 1300 BC)

Germany 2008 Nebra Sky Disc
Nebra sky disc is a bronze disc (30 cm diameter) with a blue-green patina and inlaid with gold celestial symbols. The disc was found buried on the Mittelberg hill near Nebra and is dated from ca. 1800 to 1600 BC.

Germany 1977 Archaelogical Heritage
Golden Hat of Schifferstadt is a cone-shaped headdress with a thin sheet gold as the external decoration. It is dated from ca. 1400 to 1300 BC and is assumed to have served as a religious insignia for the deities or priests of a sun-cult common in Bronze Age.

Germany 2005 Celtic Prince of Glauberg
Glauberg is an Iron Age Celtic oppidum located on a basalt plateau in Hesse, Germany. It consists of a fortified settlement and several burial mounds. A highlight of this archaeological site is a life-sized, well preserved sandstone statue of the Celtic Prince of Glauberg (ca. 500 BC).

One of the beautiful items in my Paleoanthropology collection is a SS issued by Ukraine on January 20, 2017 shows the Paleolithic period.

It contains two stamps, I think not issued as singles:


I have it on FDC with commemorative postmark, sent registered to Germany:

Who can guess the location of the cave paintings depicted on the upper right corner of the SS? (Hint 1: not in Ukraine, but far, far away Hint 2: depicted on USSR stamp from 1970 )

The answer of LaoPhil is that this paintings are from Valltorta rock art in Catalunya, Spain. He also enclosed other stamps with same paintings:

Spain, stamp from the set about UNESCO world heritage sites. This stamp represents the "Rock Art of the Iberian Mediterranean Basin" heritage site that contains rock art dating to the Upper Paleolithic or Mesolithic periods of the Stone Age.
