Hello:
I have been trying to identify the essay below.
The card size is 54x73mm
The design size printed on the card is 40x43mm
Color of card is difficult to identify, the closest it seems is an emerald greenish tint. Doesn't match anything in the Stanley Gibbons 200 colour key.
At the top of the card is a NO. 27.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Rather than an essay in a postal sense, but thinking more broadly to any security printing application, might this be better classed as a "stock design" ready to incorporate into any design? Gut feeling ... also thinking more for possible use on larger documents like stocks, bonds, checks, drafts, banknotes, etc., rather than postal since the image is quite large for stamps at more than 1.5" square.

Second, I would not get too concerned about the color (yet).

Thank you, John. This came in a lot of US Revenue and BOB items, so I leaned towards a stamp application. You are right, though, rather large.
Thank you, James. The portrait appears to be nearly the same on those revenues.
Hopefully, the "No. 27" will be of more assistance later.

This Washington Head vignette, and others, is listed in Essays and Proofs of United States Internal Revenue Stamps by George T. Turner.

Turner lists this as Essay 126 Vignette.

A compound die block with sinkage area of 56 x 154 mm has same Washington head as at the two previous with an added floral design surrounding the ellipse and the "No. 27" above. The lower half has a blank fancy scroll panel, which collectors have usually removed from the vignette portion.

Black on heavy wove paper.

There are also impressions on laid paper and tinted glazed paper. If you give us further information about the paper, I will give you the further detail from Turner's excellent reference. It seems clear that this originated with the Joseph Carpenter Co. of Philadelphia.

So Steve, your illustration is only the top half. Aren't collectors wonderful???

Yes!.... collectors are Wonderful!

I do believe it is on tinted, glazed card. Based on your information, revenuermd, I googled and found an auction link at https://stampauctionnetwork.com/f/f7450.cfm (about 3/4 of the way down the page). Four versions sold for $210 USD.

Thanks everyone for their help.
Steve
