I found this 1897 Press. Hess Staateisenbahnen 2M stamp but it has a violet '20' surcharge that I've never seen before. Anyone come across a surcharge like this or better yet have a catalogue reference to it?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Joe

The underlying stamp is a Prussian railroad freight stamp that was discontinued in May 1921. In 1922, Prussia repurposed the no-longer-valid freight stamps as seat reservation stamps, with a new value handstamped in blue or violet ink.

I'll post the Erler catalog pages tomorrow when I get back to my scanner.

Thanks PostmasterGS! Exactly what I was looking for. I never knew about the handstamps for the new seat reservation usage.

Well done Erler! (and PostmasterGS)
Gee, the Germans do it so well, clear, precise and bilingual.
