Does the #1 in this stamp represent Montreal? Is there a source on line that can help me identify origins of numeral cancel?

Montreal had the 2R1 hammer, yes. When found on cover, it is mostly seen on printed matter and circulars.

The Unitrade catalogue has a full list of the known two-ring hammers by town. I'm not able at the moment to provide an online link to a list, perhaps someone else could pick this one up.
