Kelleher Auctions charges 20% commission on winning bids. No longer a 2% discount for early payment.

Kelleher charges sales tax for 25 States.

Kelleher states Michael Rogers is retired.

Kelleher is looking to hire in house describer. (corrected)

I saw the writing on the wall for the discount when they made CC info mandatory.

Can you view the collections from the outside or do you need to actually open the albums and stockbooks?

My interview for the position did not go well. My written test description was:

"Eleven books with lots of stamps from around the countries inside of most of them. they look pretty good and some have stamps on the little paper pieces but others still don't have markings. Really hot Manama with birds. Expect fun with this one people! Estimate: Hard to say"

It's really not an easy job to do unless one has very strong philatelic skills.

Pretty funny, rogdcam!

I'm sure you could do much better if you really wanted the job...

Is a 20% seller commission rate normal? That seems to be Kelleher's default. I'm thinking 40% on any item sold is a pretty good gross margin.

It's not always 40%. The seller % is sometimes negotiated, depending on who is selling and what is going to be sold.

20% or thereabouts is pretty standard. Compare that with eBay, where do you the work yourself, without the benefit of any expertise, and pay 13% or so.

It's the listed standard. I doubt if the owner of the "Gatsby" material is paying 20%.......

Rates with stamp auction houses are negotiable . If your buying like N.Y.Stamps and spending half a million a year or you have a important collection for sale ,those rates can drop as low as 50% .

But don't try to talk them down on a run of the mill collection of $100,000 auction value or less . Everybody wants the high power items and show stopping stuff and will talk to you .

on more special items they do go down easily, even the most famous ones. 10% sales % for specials are easy to get as long as items are special. even if just s few items.

Selling and buying being tossed around. Thank you for the clarification on the 20%. Just noticed you said selling. Wow 20% selling. My mind needs a minute to take this all in. 40% plus sales tax plus shipping all eventually. How high can it go? Losses in stamp collecting are the norm but at some point like now perhaps it will be a sucker play.
