I have a nice cover of a 1d Red Imperf that has a couple of postmarks on the back that I was not able to fin in Collect British Postmarks.

One is a geometric PD stamp and the other is a circular date stamp with an N on top

On the back are the two postmarks in question I am unfamiliar with.

Hi azstampguy,

Both postmarks would've been applied on arrival in London.

Do not understand the second one

4PM-PD-4Eg
Chamfered rectangle.

Seen before but "4Eg" any clues

Where would one go for these "Receival handstamps" ?
Any members know of a suitable catalogue? / Monograph?

Seems these are referred to as "Paid-At" Handstamps.

There may be some assistance here, albeit, I cannot find the *.pdf suggested link.

There is the chamfered rectangle in the prepaid era,
that may have continued over to 1841

The "4Eg" is shown here, for the Chief or Head office, of GERRARD Street Westminster
London's West End, Picadilly, Today's Chinatown ?

Hi Rod,

The 4Eg is 4PM. Interesting that it doesn't have 4Eg on both sides. I will check my holdings to see what I have.

Now, Robson Lowe's Empire part 1 covers this area, as does Part 3 of Willcocks & Jay's County Catalogues.

The latter is largely available online here:

https://www.gbps.org.uk/information...notebook.php

Issue numbers 147, 154, 157, 158, 159 and 161 are the ones you'll want.

Yay! thanks Bobby,
I am using "A History of British Postmarks"
J.H. Daniels (London 1898)
also free online somewhere

I did think it was perhaps the Brit Time code
so it appears to be, sort of, bilingual Clock time and code.

I think it does say 4Eg on both sides.

Inking anomalies will be the death of me yet

Any idea why 2 receiving postmarks ?
(Assuming N = Noon)
Would the circular be from Worcester?

WORCESTER to LONDON = 132 Miles

The mileage is irrelevant as we're in the period of penny post.

The red circular handstamp is from London Chief Office. The rectangular one is from the District Post Chief Office. The N is a code number and won't have anything to do with time. It wouldn't have taken 4 hours to get the letter to the District Post Chief Office.

Why is it always my wallet people are willing to gamble with? (Insert uproarious laughing picture here! ) We'll have to agree to disagree Rod.

I checked my Maltese Crosses Catalogue, none shown for Worcester
the top inner ring goes slanting way off.
Should be recognisable.

The penny just dropped

"4Eg" 4pm Eg= "Evening" Sheesh. I was completely oblivious.
