I received a clue for the "X" marking on the Scott#87 I have shown.

I picked this up from a Sandfayre offering
Early Tunisia Postage dues
albeit I have no supporting literature on usage.

Rod - The "pour les combattants" overprints aren't Cinderellas - they're charity stamps in aid of Tunisian PoWs in Germany, unless you have something else in mind. The overprints I mentioned, and of which you have the 15c on 20c, are Yvert 59-66, SG 61-68 of 20/9/1918, and will be in Scott.

Ah! the penny dropped.
I dug out SG, (Part ll) because Tunisia is under France.

All explained, I'll note that in my album, as I was certainly discombobulated.
Thanks Geoff.

(the 15c opts, of 1916 only paid postage of 10c, so 5c went to aiding prisoners in Germany)

All of the timbre taxe stamps used before the specifically designed issue of 1901 were perforated copies of the coat of arms issues. They can be found, I think, with cross, pen or date cancellations.

but another query, how does one discern the 1888 from the reprints of 1893

It appears only "shades and gum"
I cannot check gum, so here is some shade examples.

I think the differences between the three (1888, 1893, 1897) issues of the " thin" numerals set are around colour and paper. As I read the catalogue, your left-hand stamp could be black/azure (1888) or black/blue (1893). The right-hand looks like black/grey (1897).

Thanks Vayolene,
I think I had one of these in my stock,
It was adhered to others, so it has been soaked,
and currently in the "drying sandwich" in a book with others..
