Stanley's kid was also peddling material to dealers at last August's APS GASS.
Not the first auction catalog composed of only Stanley's material. |

The WESTPEX Sale is for Stanley's better items. I'd check the collections lots there or perhaps at an upcoming Siegel Sale. They certainly gave a unique "Stanley only" sound when he tossed on the table the group you wanted to review. |

Wonder if the lots in this auction will have fewer extension issues than the GASS 2022 sale did. I won about 20 lots at that sale, put about 10 on extension 6 of which came back "bad". |

Bob - In the recent past I have had several Rumsey lots come back bad. They dealt with it OK, but I did not like it. There was a two-year stretch where I had quite a few issues with auction purchases from various Houses. Stopped collecting and sold my US and just sold my Russia. I am going to take a break and just enjoy this forum and learning and helping when I can. Need to recharge. |

Roger - Rumsey handled all well, very professionally. But it just shouldn't have been that way. Never have had issues like this at Cherrystone or Siegel -- or even Kelleher. |

Quote: But it just shouldn't have been that way. Completely agree. I also have had zero issues with Siegel and one with Cherrystone and Kelleher. My biggest issue with Kelleher was on the selling side but that is another story. Spink was very problematic for me. My POV is when you are dealing with Houses like these and paying 20% on top, they need to do a really good job at ensuring that what they describe is what it actually is. |

Many of the lots in the Stanley Piller sale lack certificates, so I wouldn't expect any fewer extension issues than at GASS. Also be aware - there aren't many lots with only PSAG certs, but Rumsey now includes PSAG as an "accepted authority", and you won't be able to get an extension on those lots. From their "Terms and Sale": Lots accompanied by recent (within 5 years of sale date) expert certificates are sold "as is" based on the description in the certificate. The aforementioned expertized lots may not be returned under any circumstances including those instances in which subsequent certificates yield conflicting opinions. The accepted authorities for U.S. stamps are the Philatelic Foundation (P.F.), the Philatelic Stamp Authentication and Grading, Inc. (P.S.A.G.) and the Professional Stamp Expertizing Committee (P.S.E.). |

Lot 714 - the $1 on 50c "with a few gum*soaked perfs" - more like about half of them at the top, left & bottom |

Quote: Many of the lots in the Stanley Piller sale lack certificates, so I wouldn't expect any fewer extension issues than at GASS. I would consider the differences in owners of the Pillar sale material and the three sales held during the APS GASS. If Stanley felt something was questionable he got a certificate prior to selling. If he did not own an item which went in for a cert, he was likely contacted as an expert for the certification, especially with PF certs. The same could no be said of the property owners of the GASS sales. This is not a comment on the business practices of Rumsey, Siegel, Kelleher or others, it is a comment about the source of the material. |

With all due respect to Rumsey the stamps will require certs especially if you ever intend to sell. I realize that it is stated that they are Stanley's but that is a leap of faith for a terminal cynic such as myself. |

I still have my copy of the 1993 Siegel sale of Piller's 3c 1851-57 Issue. I don't think I will ever part with it! Mostly B&W photos, but still a keeper. When looking over Schuyler's sale of Piller stuff, it seemed that it got 'up' to a certain point and then petered out. I am glad to hear that there will add'l material in the Westpex Sale. I will be bidding in the current sale, but looking forward to the Westpex Sale for more. And, yes, to those that commented about stamps without certs. I wonder why some stamps that one would hope (and expect, frankly) to have certs, don't. I suspect Rumsey thinks Piller's name is cache enough. |
