Saturday deliveries are happening in the leadup to Christmas, and kids sending letters to Santa.

Bobby - I didn't realise that Australia didn't have Saturday deliveries! Where have you been?

I know that we used to, but I don't know when they stopped.

Somewhere around that time, we only get 2 deliveries a week Tuesday evening, and Friday evening,
I hear the air brakes of the pantechnicon, when they pull up at the Post Office down the road. Usually at Midnight.

Currently looking at Bunnings Hardware stores are offering deliveries
That may save me a 450 Kilometre round trip

It appears as though Saturday mail delivery ceased in Australia in 1974.

Ah Yes, my bad,
I was thinking just daily mail.
Gee 1974, I was into rock n roll and sports cars.

I think there were Sunday deliveries here (outside London) until the First World War. That probably also marked the end of the dozen deliveries a day that Londoners used to get.

I wonder when the Postal horn died out?
(We can thank Francois de Taxis (postmaster of the Netherlands) for that beauty, to establish the right of way, for postal postillions, on the highway year 1500)

It was still in vogue in Canada in 1867 under section 363 of the postal act.

It would have been magic, to hear the postal horn in a village in the early days.

I recall as a kid, Sunday Church bells were a common and comforting peal.
(albeit I did not live alongside the church)

Music link.."Living in the past"..(Jethro Tull)

Saturday mail deliveries used to occur fairly recently in the Melbourne area. Maybe two or three years back?
I think it was mainly to deliver the large number of Xmas cards.
When I was growing up in the sixties, we used to get mail deliveries in the morning and in the afternoon. The postie on his bicycle would always blow his whistle at each house. The local dogs must have had a field day.

Things aren't quite that bleak here Geoff

That said, we're still waiting for Spring to properly arrive.

I was a bit taken aback that NSW got this weather! This image - or a variant - was popular with Imperial Tobacco and BAT, and appeared in various card series.
