I recently got a cover/letter written in 1812. I could make out some of the writing, but I need help reading the rest. This is what I have so far:

Couple of bits: 1st line: J Stackhouse, Esq 2nd line: 24.14.3 may be an odd way of writing 24 March 1814 (the last may be an error). Then "Deduct". Figure at end of line is £17.18s.6d. 3rd line: "goodness", not "good". "Mrs Barrol's" or similar. 4th line: "on or before the 1st of June, where a receipt shall be left, it will .. 5th line: "oblige y[ou]r obed[ien]t servant … 6th line: Dav[i]d Parry Lady day falls on 25 March. |

I think the 24.14.3 is 24 pounds, 14 shillings and three pence. The same style was used for the amount to be deducted, and the symbols added above. The writing is dated 19 May 1812, so I do not expect this to be a date for 1814. |

The sending solicitor was from Lugwardine, a village near Hereford. I haven't been able to locate any record of him as the earliest business directory I've found is 1830. |

Doing the old money Sterling sums must be "Deduct Land tax /Property tax of £6/15/9d " (Gives the grand total of £17/18/6d as correct) (20 shillings to the pound, 12 pennies to the shilling) ----------------------------- Quote: The sending solicitor was from Lugwardine, a village near Hereford Wow! (No LUGWARDINE Postmark existing in the database) Mention in the Midland Mail Index (no date offered) Parcel Post Labels (Stifford's Bridge and Lugwardine) |

Confirming much of the above, the postmark on the address side appears to read:
HEREFORD MY 20 1812.
The postage was 7(pence?)

Quote: The postage was 7(pence?) That was my guess. High Rent? Value of £17 from 1812 to 2022 £17 in 1812 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £1,428.88 today 1812 England was at war with America |
