I have just published a new blog post discussing the different varieties of the perforated penny reds. I discuss the differences, give tips for identifying them, but I also get into the "why" - the backstory that explains why the varieties exist. Hendy's book is an excellent reference. For numeral cancellations, it is well supplemented by Brummel's and Westley's books.
