Brome Lake

The village was founded in 1802 by United Empire Loyalists from the New England states and New York. Originally known as Coldbrook for the stream that runs through the centre of the village, in 1855 the village had become the county seat of Brome County, Quebec. In 1971, seven villages on Brome Lake, Bondville, East Hill, Foster, Fulford, Knowlton, Iron Hill and West Brome, were amalgamated to create the current town, now in the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality of the Estrie administrative region.

Perhaps it made its way to the US?

There was a post office at KNOWLESVILLE in New Brunswick from 1861 to 1915.

The post office at KNOWLTON in Quebec was there from 1861 to at least 1945.

There were also post offices at KNOWLTON FALLS (1851 to 1859} and KNOWLTON LANDING (1872 to 1879) and a post office KNOWLES in Nova Scotia from 1909 to 1959).

Most of these you can eliminate by date or by length of name in the cancel.

I could find no example of KNOWLTON as a Circular Date Stamp.
If they exist, may be fairly scarce I would suggest.

Knowlton also had a duplex hammer known used from 1914 to 1959. I don't have an image, just a catalogue entry.

It probably had other hammers, as the post office was open for more than a century.

BTW, the stamp has a nice shade. On my monitor it appears that it might be an indian or copper red.

I assume that the C.E. In the second example is for Canada East. It is dated 1868 which the year after confederation in 1867 when the province of Quebec was formed from part of Canada East.

The stamp is a nice 1870s Scott 37. Nice very small re-entry at the very bottom lower left.
