Hello,

I have a question about the perfins on this US R169P 1898 25 cent Documentary stamp? Would anyone know the company that made such Perfins?

With respect, Barg

You will have better luck contacting a moderator and having them move this to the back of book section. I know a couple of the Revenue folks pop in here but they mostly hang out over there.

I suspect most of us will be in the same boat. I know that I have seen it before, but I have no idea who used it.

If memory serves, it is a soap company.

I will need to dig in the perfin guide for specifics...

I had perfume pop into my head when I saw it, but I don't know why.

It might be Imperial Soap Company of Boston, Mass. They had a printed cancel on the battleships that is very similar to this.

But I wasn't paying attention to the stamp. This is a Documentary stamp, used on a document and probably cancelled with this punch. It really needs to be found on the document for further identification.

I have spent some time in the Revenue Perfin Catalog that was put together by the late Arthur Mongan. I do not believe that Art ever recorded this pattern. I agree that this will probably have to found intact on a document in order to positively identify the user. The 25¢ denomination suggests to me to look on a stock certificate.

All,

Eric nailed what I was thinking of.

Quote:
Imperial Soap Company of Boston, Mass.

I was remembering a printed canx, not a perfin.

I also spent time going through Art's catalog and was unable to find this perfin canx.

The mystery continues!

I have four other printed cancellations by Imperial Soap Company of Boston that do not show either a date or the initials of the company. But I agree that the pattern of holes in the documentary stamp do not remind me of Imperial Soap Company.

I have four other printed cancellations by Imperial Soap Company of Boston that do not show either a date or the initials of the company. These patterns are well known to collectors of cancellations on the proprietary battleships.

I agree that the pattern of holes in the documentary battleship stamp do not remind me of Imperial Soap Company.

Here is the first of the Imperial Soap Company's cancels without company initials or date.

A second of the Imperial Soap Company's cancels without company initials or date.

A third of the Imperial Soap Company's cancels without company initials or date.

And finally a fourth of the Imperial Soap Company's cancels without company initials or date.

Imperial Soap Company did originally use cancels with the company name.

They also used company initials.
