I have a 40+- of 805 (1938 Martha Washington 1-1/2c brown) and just found 3 more and the 3 are all precancelled in boston.

Most of the time I've encountered precancelled it seem they have a letter for them like in this case 805b or something like that. Is there some kind of rule about why some would have their own numbers while others would not?

805b is a horizontal pair, imperf between. The imperf between is why it is a numbered variety. If 805b is precancelled it falls in the used category for a catalog value.
