I have what I believe is a cracked or scratched plate used for this R6c. This variety is not shown on the Revenue Collector's website. Does anyone concur?

Looks like a scratch to me. Others more familiar with plate flaws and 1st issue revenues will know better than me if it's a new discovery. However, I looked through some back issues of The American Revenuer to see if it had been noted previously, and came across this info which may be useful. From the October 1997 issue, Anthony Giacomelli's article "Cracked Plates versus Plate Scratches":

Quote:
Beware when acquiring the so-called cracked plate stamps. They are often misdescribed scratches. See if there is a depression in the back of the stamp corresponding with a line of color on the front. Look for the raised ridge of paper at the line of color on the face of the stamp. Examine the flaw with a moderate powered magnifier. A scratch is fairly straight and smooth edged while a crack will be more erratic and jagged.

I scanned the back, to see if it was a R6d, and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. It's probably just a scratched plate.

Just noticed that the crack/scratch extends below the "K" as well.

it looks like a scratch to me......but I wonder if a straight line extension of the top intersects the layout dot at the top right corner? if so it may be a misplaced layout line.

Why would a layout line be at an angle?

Can't possibly be silk; it was cancelled in 1866. Silk paper was not used until 1870.

Definitely a scratch, not a plate crack. Scratches are almost always straight, but they could curve a small bit.

Thanks RevCollector, I didn't know that. I'm just in the habit of scanning both sides of a stamp.
