This might be some nostalgia for some.

I love these covers and have a question. What is "The Protective Information Bureau For Stamp Dealers" seen on the 2nd cover?

So I assume that the PIB acted as a central database for deadbeat and swindling customers?

There are a bunch of stamp dealers covers out there. Here are three from my collection:

I don't know anything about this dealer, but I'm guessing that by using the Quaker image he was wanting to create an image of honesty in dealing, or then maybe he was a Quaker by faith. Cover posted 1901 in Toledo.


The Economist Stamp Co., was one of the older and longer running dealerships on Nassau Street.


I love this one. Note the return address. This guy was in the Army and running his stamp dealership from his barracks. Given the date of posting, he most likely was a WW I draftee. He was involved in a real saga. He got caught up in a small mutiny, court martialed, convicted, sent to Ft. Leavenworth to do his time, later exonerated, sent back to active duty and the last I could find about him, he had been transferred to Ft. Bliss, Texas. ,

Max Ohlman used the same logo for his ads in stamp publications. I don't think he ever changed it.


This cover is a little unusual in that it is a piece of postal stationery, probably of foreign origin, with Handshaw's corner card printed on it and U.S. postage applied. The embossed postage is just visible at top and bottom.

I love stamp dealer covers, especially covers from revenue stamp dealers, as that dovetails with my collecting interests. I believe Eric Jackson also personally collects covers from revenue stamp dealers, although I've not seen his collection.

Some of interest follow. The first two are from the Siegel Auctions archive, sadly not covers I actually own.

Revenuecollector, here is a later Burger & Co piece sent to Mr. Heinrich Koehler of the Koehler Auction House that is still in operation. I noticed the address is changed for Burger & Co.

Even though philatelic, it's neat seeing a 30-cent Columbian used on actual piece/cover/label.
