I have a sealed package of stamps (Southeastern Lighthouse series SC 3787*3791) that says "this package not suitable for philatelic archiving" my dad bought in 2002. The stamps look fine. What should I be worried about? What should I do? Open it and discard the package or sell it as is? is it worth more or less in its package.
The stamps are common and valid for postage. Most of the philatelic bureaus (US, Canada etc.) have the same note on their sealed packages because the packaging materials could cause harm over time. There is no added sales value for these stamps in keeping them in the packaging.
When it says that on the package it means to take it out and put it in an album, stockbook etc as soon as you buy it. The package is most likely no immediate danger to your stamps, but chemically the damage has already started.
Those stamps are worth face value regardless. Use them for postage. A lot of packaging isn't chemically inert or acid-free and over time, it will start to degrade your stamps.
