I noticed Scott catalog lists a variety for 1990 Ledgendary Creatures block of 4 with the main one being perf 12.5x13.5 A579 times 4 stamps. 1289,1290,1291 and 1292.

The second type is listed perf 12.5x 12 . 1289a,1290a, 1291a and 1292c block of 4. A579 with of course the second type being worth 10 times more.

My question is dose anyone have a new updated catalog with this variety listed ? Because I have the type two block of 4 stamps. The cancellation has National Philatelic Center.

Unitrade lists the se-tenant block of 1289a-1292c as 1292d with a cv of $40 for a used block (non-first day cancel). There is no value for the block with a FD cancel.

Is your block a blank corner block? The value for that block is $120. Unitrade notes that a plate block is rare.

I looked up the National Philatelic Centre in Antigonish. Didn't know about it and I live in Nova Scotia! Thought I should educate myself.

However, do I understand that it is permanently closed? If so, since when? I can't seem to find any lead!

Thanks for you time!

I know that the stamp was probably ordered from there and shipped to dealers all over. Then bought by the public. It was not bought in Nova Scotia.

This reminds me of a post I made a few years ago: Modern Perforation Anomaly Scenarios
I think the link is: http://goscf.com/t/71989

First I was kinda disappointed that, instead of offering more ridiculous scenarios about what might go on in the print department, the real experts zeroed in on how it might really have happened. Very impressive!

Second, the most important revelation for me was that the folks in the print department must have been fully aware of the perf change, yet informed no one.

Third, it scares me to think that they may well have let a select few know about it.

I would hesitate to get too deep into conspiracy theories relating to those doing the printing and perforating. Most explanations are simple and most will show they are trying to get a job done on a deadline and couldn't care less about how collectors or catalogers may view their work in the future. If using two perforating machines gets the job done in half the time, then great for them! Nor would they have any way of tracking where any "special" stock might end up being sold.

This is a relatively 'late' cancellation, as the stamp set was issued in 1990. I do not know why, and how, it was cancelled at the 'Philatelic Center' at that time, but the main Antigonish post office may have had this cancel for collector use.

A small portion of the overall printing was produced with these coarser perforations, possibly due to a problem with the original perforator. Most of these stamps were used for production of small cards with a pair of the stamps on each for a promotion with MacDonald's (for kids). They also have special cancellations, but exist only in vertical pairs. A number of these coarsely perforated stamps were also used in a "Legendary Creatures" pack sold by Canada Post in 1990. The pack contained a mint block of four of the stamps, as well as a FDC with a block of four, and many (but not all!) of these packages contained the variety stamps. They are sought-after for these stamps.

Some sheets did get out into general sale at post offices, but these had the plate block inscriptions trimmed off. A few full sheets with plate blocks are known to exist, possibly sold though the Philatelic Center, or through local philatelic counters in major cities. Plate blocks are expensive, valued in the Unitrade catalogue at $425.00 each.

I hope this helps in the discussion...
