A nice looking cancel but who was late for what? Is this a Revenue Cancel? I have seen the term used before but until I saw this cancellation, I had never really thought about what exactly was being paid for here.

Interesting !
Never seen an Octagonal "Late Fee" before.

We know of 51 Late fee markings,
35 are rectangular or circular dated cancellations
13 from Sydney
12 from melbourne
5 from Brisbane
4 from Adelaide
and 1 from Launceston (Tasmania)

I think we can rule out NSW .

I have an image of one on a 6d 'roo, but it must predate my naming convention that includes the site I snaffled it from.

Sure. If anyone recognizes the source, I'll add it to my file name.

Note that there is something going on to the right of the octagonal cancel...a CDS, perhaps?

More digging is necessary at some point when I have more time.

Solved
Reasoning: STO next character had to have a curve at top ... so maybe a "C"

Arc of name had to be LARGE to fit the CDS

The hammer had to be used FREQUENTLY, (manufacture of a DUPLEX LATE FEE hammer....Unusual)

So "STOC" there are 29 Pmks in Oz , and one stood out !

STOCK EXCHANGE

.............and there it was VICTORIA (Hipstamp)

Interesting all around. Paying extra to make the boat (train, bus, plane, ) when you were late for a regular mail pickup was something that had not occurred to me. Looking at the 6p and 1p posted seems to show that this octagonal Mark is paired to a circular date cancel as the semi-circle showing is in exactly the same place in relation to the octagon. A duplex cancelling device of some sort?

Is this a Revenue Cancel?

As far as I know, unlike many other British Commonwealth countries, Australian postage stamps were never valid for revenue purposes.

Throughout most of the 20th century each individual Australian state and territory issued its own revenue stamps.
