Hi Everyone! It would be interesting to know your opinion, colleagues, on the value of this postage stamp. 3 cents Washington, Scott - 720, A226. On the one hand, in the catalog of Scott, this postage stamp is of little value, on the other hand, it is sold at auctions for a high price. How much does the cancellation of a given postage stamp (New York) affect the value?

This is called a "Pre-cancel". These were cancelled prior to being placed on a cover. IF you hit the "Send a note to moderator" button they can move this thread here: http://goscf.com/f/43 |

You're asking for the value - most of these are not even a dime a dozen, but sometimes a rarity can be found

The value of the one you show is less than zero.
New York being a very large city obviously is not hard to find.
Can you post a link to the auction/s where these sold for a high price?
Don't use Ebay or other stamp sales sites as barometers of value. Anyone can ask whatever they want for their product.

If you want to understand, and learn from the collectors here, start with a full description of the assumptions and facts that you have discovered about your stamp, where you have researched or looked, then let the people here guide you. Don't make us guess. Thank you |

I'm not a great specialist in postage stamps. I have a small collection, there are interesting stamps, the value of which I am sure, but there are stamps that I am not sure about. This 720 is one of them. I'm not a professional, so I primarily focus on eBay. Sometimes look Auktionshaus or Status. |

There is a big difference between Auktionhaus / Status International and Ebay.
The first 2 deal in high end material and the latter deals in everything under the sun.
Ebay isn't a horrible place but as I stated, don't use it for a barometer of value. If you do, make sure to look at the "Sold" prices.
For common stamps ebay is a good place to source them. |

Go to hipstamp and type the following in the search bar:
"720 new york precancel"
You'll get several results. Keep in mind, these are asking prices, not selling prices. If you wanted any or all of them, you could buy them right now at the listed prices.
If you wanted to sell at the listed prices, it might sit for years.
It's possible that a specialist could notice something about yours that is more attractive than the average precancel, but that's highly unlikely. |

Cjd Thanks! I'll try to study the topic of stamps with a precancel in more depth. Considering that there are more similar ones in my collection. Therefore, I want to get true information about such stamps. |
