Hmm. Has all the characteristics of an urban myth, as in the story of the abandoned wife who sold her ex's car/record collection etc for peanuts to prevent the money from going to his new love.

Well, as an American who worked for a French company for 28 years, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

I have travelled to France on a number of occasions. I also have worked for an international corporation that had French subsidiaries. They have a different culture and work ethics from those in Germany and the Netherlands.

In general, I have experienced the French as friendly. Most were very helpful, some less so.

I've found staff in French post offices friendly and helpful, as are French people in general. And French waiters are the best.

Maybe the experience is different for folks from the U.K. or the Continent versus Americans. Or for folks like myself who at least try to speak French rather than assume everyone will speak English.
