I recently acquired several pages of Chinese stamps, a mix of Imperial, Taiwan, and PRC. Scott's catalogue gives descriptions of early PRC reprints but I have been unable to find any information regarding more modern forgeries. Here is one of the stamps that is in the lot...

Scott's says beware of forgeries and my instinct tells me they aren't genuine but you never know what might turn up!
My question is how do I determine if it is a genuine or a forgery?

Are you sure of the color that you scanned ? Does not look right and is the lettering of Mao's thoughts out of focus or was the stamp you have was done/ printed from a photo ? China Government doesn't blur their lettering .

If it is a Forgery it was done by the same people who forged the monkey stamp ,that weird funky red ink .

Is it my eyesight? Maybe not. My opinion- Looks like the stamp was printed after it was perforated as indicated by the straight white along the perfs edges.Usually the tearing of perfs cause white fibres to show. Not on this one

Edit: - my afterthought- Usually the tearing of perfs through inked paper would cause a more inconsistent line of white fibres to show.

Have to say that after looking at a LOT of examples of these (genuine) in auction catalogs it is not a slam dunk as to whether or not it is a fake. Feldman and Kelleher Rogers have some examples.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Regarding the red color. I know Chinese are very fond of red - is there a particular shade that is preferred or any color reference that can be used?
The lettering is very clear when viewed with a magnifying glass.
The comment about the white tips of the perorations was interesting. I have 10 stamps from that group 5 gold and 5 red. When I look closely at the red ones it does appear that the print was applied after the perforation. These were produced originally in strips of 5 so you would expect most of the perf tips to be essentially red. Also the stamp side of the white perf. tips all seem to be in a straight line. The gold ones are more difficult with very little white but where I can see white they too seem to be in a line. The images on another website that is forbidden to mention would appear to be fakes.
I take a look at the link rogdcam posted and do some close up scans of my stamps and post them shortly.

Here are some close up scans of portions of the stamps....

This scan shows the bottom right of the red stamp and bottom left of the gold stamp. You can see that the stamp appears to have been printed after perforation.

This is a close-up of the text printed on the red stamp

Close-up or text on gold stamp

This is a scan (reduced to be within upload limit) of another stamp (#958) in the collection

And finally a scan of the text on the last image

Thanks for all the help so far!!
