New Member - Help With Info/Year Etc And Value Please

Hi guys my name is Tiago from Portugal, I am new at stamps world.. I started because I receive some stamps from my grandfather who ask me if it have some value. But in reallity I started to enjoy the info behind the stamps :)

so I would like to be helped finding info and value of my stamps (i know that most of the stamps doesnt have value, but I have a lot.. maybe some have .. and if don't, I would like to know more about them anyway



i have a lot more stamps. but I will ask for help a little at a time








p.s should I post closer photographs?

Hello. These are what are known as definitive stamps - stamps used day-to-day over many years, rather than being issued to commemorate special events. Yours are all very common, with no financial value, I'm afraid.

Welcome to the Forum Tiago! I think your original idea was better- post a few at a time. For the ones you already posted, I agree they are very common USA used stamps with virtually no value. Many millions or even billions of each of your pictured stamps were issued, thus there are millions more of these stamps available then there are collectors who want them.

Yours are used stamps which are generally worth much less than unused stamps.

In the US where these stamps were issued and valid, if they were all unused they would be worth their full face value IF used to mail a letter today. If sold as a group of mixed unused stamps, they would sell for 60-80% of their face value in the USA.

Since you are in Portugal, the stamps cannot be used on you country's mail and thus are not even worth face value if unused. As used stamps they are not worth the costs involved to sell them.

Remember, of all used stamps, only 10-20% have value, the other 80-90% have none (meaning it costs more to you to sell them than they are worth).

That said, they are a good start to a fun and educational hobby.

That is a simple and easy website catalog that can give you a lot of information, and the ability to search.

I do not recommend Stamp World, read their Terms of Use policy and their Privacy Policy which clearly state they are selling your personal information. Additionally, they do not support multiple languages.

It is a personal website which is completely non-commercial, no ads, no personal info collected and sold.

I think you can use their catalog without registering.
I thought stampsmarter was more USA-oriented, and for WW stampworld can do.

Even just using their site means you are agreeing to let them gather and use your personal information. From Stamp World policy page


And if you then go to Freestar and read their Privacy Policy, you will see that they are also selling your information to even more 3rd parties. In my opinion with this situation Stamp World has no idea where the info they are gathering and selling will ultimately end up.

But they are gathering your IP address, your location, your browser, your operating system, the website you were on just before you went to Stamp World, the website to go to after you leave Stamp World, how long you were on the Stamp World site, which pages you viewed, which page you left from, things you clicked on during your visit, the date and time.

You might think, 'but without my name they still don't know who I am so I am safe. Well, only if you have never been to other websites where they do know your name. These data harvesting companies are making billions by harvesting your info from thousands of site we visit and then tying it together in profiles. The better they can tie it all together, the more money they make. They can cross reference your IP address to another site which does have your name in a millisecond.

In my opinion no one should think that they are anonymous on any site. No one should think that they do not already have many, many profiles built for them including those which contain your credit report, you marital status, and all kinds of other personal info.

And no one should think that anyone would invest thousand of man hours and big bucks on publishing a website that is totally 'free' (other than a handful of crazy philatelist who have personal websites). Stamp World is a money making, commercial website; you are the product.

Enjoy having fun with stamps! That is the name of this game. Wonderful you are carrying on your father's collection. You are the next steward of a family treasure you can pass on to future generations. Its value as a family heirloom wil always surpass it monetary value.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

In terms of money, they dont worth a lot but I'm sure you can learn a lot from us history through those stamps.
