I Can Not Find This Mexican Stamp Help!

This stamp looks very strange.

No, it doesn't. Postally used, looks like it may be the 1898 issue, hinged, color has been damaged by sun/age. And before you go onto eBay and try to swindle someone with this like you tried to do with that Haiti specimen, this is not a $12,000 stamp.

What is it about that stamp than makes you say it, "looks very strange."

That is Scott Mexico design type A23. Correct identification of the perforation gauge and watermark (or unwatermarked) variety is needed for more detail determination. The most common variety, Scott 248, has an undamaged used value of one dollar. Your stamp is damaged due to the fact the perforations on the upper part of the right side of the stamp have been cut off. In that condition, the value would be ten cents or less.

Speaking of perfs, I'm not convinced both pictures are of the same stamp. The obverse right-side perfs are cut as PPG notes, yet the left side in the reverse image (the sides having flipped) are intact…

Did anyone notice the zz? And the Ddd? And a few other letters? This stamp looks like an error.

If you want comments on specific features, you'll need to do much better with your images.

Two new (6-1-2023 eBay listings)

I gather the OP had no problem identifying this new eBay listing. As a Scott Mexico design A79, the watermarked and rouletted version is Sc. #650, priced at 25 cents ($0.25) mint or used.




As to the following eBay listing, I will let someone with the Higgins & Gage World Postal Stationery Catalog mention the catalog value from which a deep discount will be needed due to condition--If it is a stamp, it would be design A18, the most common as #185 with an undamaged used value of $2.25 but only a fraction of that in its present condition.





WOW the stamp market certainly is strong in Oroville, California but not as strong as Walnut Creek, California listings. [ ]

At those multiples of catalog, I need to move, sell my collection, donate a few million to the APS and then retire to an nice 10,000 or 20,000 acre ranch in Montana, with a summer home in the Bahamas.

This kind of idiocy is so misleading for new collectors & non-collectors and damages the hobby. I got called for an appraisal a couple weeks ago - the gentlemen thought he had around $25,000 worth, based on finding searches for common stuff like this listed for crazy amounts. Reviewed his collection - an large assortment of cheap used with a few mid-range - actual value was less than $100 - which he found very hard to believe, since he'd "seen different on the Google searches.". Sigh.

Not sure why he bothers posting questions in SCF, when he is going to take old dust and call it gold dust on eBay, regardless of what anyone here says.

In this situation, I first gave the poster the benefit of the doubt and tried to not make assumptions about their intentions. Now that that it appears this person has no intention in listening to feedback from knowledgeable philatelists, trying to improve their listings, and in fact is choosing to continue their deceptive listings; I am no longer giving them the benefit of the doubt.

But that does not imply that I am going to remove or lock these threads; this DOES NOT mean that the forum is "hosting/entertaining a deliberate bad actor". One of the primary purposes of this community is education and making informed buying decisions is apart of objective.

First, I think it is helpful to the hobby in general to try to work with anyone who has listings that need improvement. If we can assist with driving change in mis-identified and/or poorly described material then it is a 'win' for the health of the hobby. But even in situations, like this one, where we are not successful, these threads carry an important educational role. It requires two things; we have to post the seller's name and we should post some screen shots of their lists in the thread. This then is picked up by search engines and buyers can read the threads before making a purchase and decide if they want to deal with the seller.

Towards that end and in my opinion, adding snarky posts to these threads actually hurts more than it helps. A thread full of snarky posts makes it look like we are just a bunch of elitists 'shooting noobs in a barrel'. We want those who have search on the sellers name and are seeking to make informed buying decisions to feel like they are reading objective feedback, not emotion-based responses.

I won't answer any of her messages as she seems to have issues over the images she posts. Last week it was two identical stamps, this week the front and reverse images were different stamps. Maybe her doll accessories are the main line of business but stamps and coins seem to be a side line where price is whatever the market or the lack thereof can bear.

I have done the latter, for the former, it is jujusales as the eBay ID not to be confused with jujustamps as the user name here at SCF.





The profile picture on eBay shows a she so not all badness needs be heaped on males.


This stamp was listed today. It seems to be Mexico 187 with a catalog value used of $0.60 (sixty cents).
