Fortunately for these stamps there are many surviving large multiples (panes/blocks etc.) that appear frequently at auction. The paper is never brown or brownish.

Looks like run of the mill toning to me. Comparing an 85 to an 86 muddies the waters a bit, so here's four mint 86s from the few dozen I have. Top left one is quite toned, top right one not, ones in bottom row between. All same paper.

Gmot, very nice exhibit. Have you tried "de-toning" one to see what happens?

No, I haven't done anything with these, hanging out in a stockbook at the moment with a few dozen 85s. Will probably leave them all as is.

Please provide reference that bacteria are involved.

I apologize.
Deterioration agents like bacteria are almost always included when the toning is from dangerous humidity levels. I conflated it with toning in general which is a mistake.
Toning caused by sunlight exposure is a different type, and wouldn't include all the nasty critters that come with incorrect temperature or humidity.
Does that sound correct?

I wonder if stamps in Canada (most parts) are likely to have a "kinder" toning due to low humidity levels / cooler temperatures.

Now that I know this, I wouldn't mind more pieces that are toned like this. I think it looks great!

Yep. The top two look just like mine. Nice set, gmot! Looks like we both have the "muddy papers" variety
