Hello

I hope this is a suitable place for my question. I don't collect USA so apologies if this is obvious but I have come across this specimen and I cannot find it in any of my stamp catalogue resources. Should I class this as a Cinderella? Is, or was Husseys a private postal service in the USA perhaps similar to something like Lundy Island here in the UK?

Grateful for your thoughts. Thanks.

This was a local delivery service (more like a messenger than a post office) in New York City in the 1800's. Scott 87L75.

BananaBread, one of the easiest things to do is Google the info on the stamp, like "Hussey's Express". There is all sorts of info coming up when you do that

These were widely reprinted years later. I can't say whether your example is genuine or a reproduction. Perhaps another member can give it a better appraisal.

The smaller print seems to be handwritten. Was it usual to use handwritten plates in private mail service?

edited.

I just saw in Rod's thread about the Dominican Republic another stamp with a handwritten part. How widespread was this practice?

Handwritten or hand-engraved?

I guess hand engraved? You can see that in both stamps the writing is not uniform, like the letters R O S in the first image and the letters R E A N and more in the second image. Also, the baseline of CENTENARIO in the second image isn't straight. That's why I thought it was a cheap forgery, but no one else suggested it.

Cool "stamp" Banana; this would make a pretty nice poster, IMO.
