I wasn't aware there was an imperf/grilled version of this stamp that was postally used; which leads to the obvious conclusion that the cancellation is a forgery. |

Given that there are portions of the adjoining stamps design left and bottom I would guess a straddle margin copy trimmed at top and right. |

What Scott # would you say this is then? Again, I wasn't aware of what I'd normally call a generic "65" or variety thereof was ever postally used with a grill and imperforated. Of course the fact that it has gum leads me to believe that it was not actually postally used, or it was somehow and then re-gummed. In either case, something is off.
Freely admit I know almost nothing about cancellations, so assumed it was an essay/proof with a forged cancellation and ostensibly the grill as well.
But am still left wondering what the "stamp" so to speak is to start with, hence the shot in the dark of a proof or essay.
Appreciate the replies as always. |

Andy - What I am saying is that the stamp is a normal 65 that was a straddle margin copy which would account for the straight edge that shows a portion of the adjoining stamps design. The sides that were perforated were trimmed. The stamp was used normally and cancelled. That is my opinion. |

These are not uncommon. It is a straddle pane copy. Here is one I bought as a novelty for a tenner. |

With all due respect I still don't think think we have accounted for the presence of the grill. If genuine grill that would appear to disqualify a regularly issued Scott 65 , straddle margin copy or not leaving Scott 88, Scott 94 straddle copy with trimmed perfs, an imperf die or trial copy or proof with grill that was nonetheless used, or a fake grill.. Stallzse: I don't see remnants of adjoining stamps in the margins of the example you show which are clearly present on the index stamp that started this discussion.
I'm having a difficult time imaging what this sheet looked like that this came from if we are calling this a Scott 65. |

My assumption of the one I posted is a first column right pane stamp which would explain not seeing portions of an adjoining stamp.
I don't think the impression is sharp enough for it to be a proof of some type. |
