In the May issue of the AP, Randy Shoemaker wrote an article called "Expertizing Alterations" and has a section on tools.

He made some comments regard certain SONIC Images tool version's accuracy.. My sample has a 2002 date printed and no idea what version I have. I use it only for the mm scale.

I saw the article Mr. angore. The number refers to the functions of the gauge, I have the 12 and it has 12 functions. I imagine the 10 has 10 functions....
I sent in a couple of flat plate coils that perfed correctly, measured correctly, on the 12 and guess what? They were all certed as genuine!
Cheers mark

I understand the function count meaning but not sure I am counting right. My guess is it around 10. It states Version 4 2003.

Acetate and other plastics are much more prone to shrinkage than metal over time and/or if exposed to high environmental temperatures.

Other than using a transparent gauge when verifying a stamp on cover; I reach for a simple metal gauge. For the majority of my collecting needs, I do not need anything more than whole or half perforations gauging.

Did the article mention if the author tested a number of "11" gauges for accuracy? I wonder if the manufacturer changed plastic materials (or vendors) over the various production runs?

Is he referring to the Kiusalas gauges for the U.S. and Canada?

Mine is different. The scabbard that contains my Gauge states that it 3X laminated to prevent shrinkage. Yours is much earlier. I took a machinist rule (metal of course) and measured the measurements (mm on 2 sides) on my gauge, they were spot on at 40x. I would assume yours could be verified also.
What I like is that on my gauge the printing is between the laminations so they don't wear.
