The toning of her face is completely different between the two, is this a possible error?

Nope. Either multiple cylinders for the maroon crimson were used or the printing was done in multiple batches causing different 'shades.' What you have is a 'shade' variety, not an error.

Yes a small color variety ,you could see these often at British stamps.
