I just saw this on Ebay. I have been researching and have never seen this before. What does everyone think? Is it real?

A NYStamps special. If it was a genuine error the value of it would make the inverted version look cheap in comparison. There is a good reason it has NO certificate with it. The bidders that have it up to $157 are brain dead. https://www.ebay.com/itm/314822210432 |

Trolling for suckers, never good for the hobby (not that this matters, folks still keep supporting them). Don |

No chance of it being genuine. If anyone actually thought it was, they would send it in for a cert. |

You can still see some of the design. The cancel is also almost gone, too, inside the vignette. We have a part time chemist here, working overtime to bleach out the vignette.. |

The center is not missing, it has been partially erased (probably chemically). These stamps were printed using two passes through the printing press - once for the frame with green ink and once for the vignette with black ink. A vignette missing error is possible (if a sheet only went through the printing press once) but the then the vignette would be entirely missing - if you look above "FAST LAKE" at the bottom left of the vignette you still see some of the black ink that the faker could not remove without erasing the green frame. |

Agree with all of the above ... chemically altered center.
I'm confused about the title listing that says, "nystamps US Stamp # 294 Center Missing Error Paid $1000 S8x958". What is the meaning of "Paid $1000"? |

The seller is claiming that the previous owner paid that much for this. If so, he or she was an idiot. |

I know very little about US stamps. But even I dare to say the centre has been removed. |

Quote: if you look above "FAST LAKE" at the bottom left of the vignette you still see some of the black ink that the faker could not remove without erasing the green frame Here's a slightly better enlargement of most of the stamp. Yes, there is evidence of the vignette throughout. |

"The seller is claiming that the previous owner paid that much for this. "
They frequently make similar claims with prices that would've made Langs jealous. |

fyi, for future cross-reference, see thread http://goscf.com/t/85122#788049 for an example of how a missing vignette might be possible, due to foldover, or a rogue piece of paper landing on the printing press during the printing of the black. |
