Hi all. I'm fairly new to philately, I only started collecting last year, and I'm struggling on my latest hunt for a 19th century cover from the Danish West Indies. I'm specifically looking for a cover/letter/piece of postal history, that would have been on the RMS Rhone or RMS Wye. These two steamships were part of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company's fleet. Both sank in a hurricane in the Virgin Islands in 1867. While on a family vacation in St Thomas, I acquired a plate recovered from the shipwrecks. So now I'm gathering more postal history from this event to put together a display.
I'm able to find covers from around the 1860's that passed through St Thomas but I'm completely lost on how to identify whether they traveled with the RMSPC, much less tell which ship they were on. I think that this involves deciphering postmarks and shipping routes, but I honestly have no idea where to start with this.
