For a philatelic article I'm researching, I need to learn about Japan Scott 1710-1729 and 1775-1794--two series of stamps honoring the haiku poet Basho. I know a lot about Basho but not about Japanese stamps. (My primary collecting area is Ireland.)

The stamps come it pairs, and each pair includes a Basho haiku. Any advice as to where I can learn which haikus are included? I don't read Japanese, but I do have a complete Basho in English translation, so with some guidance, I should be able to track down the English versions.

I'm attaching an image of the first pair of stamps--1710/11. The image on the left stamp is Basho with a printed copy of the haiku in the margin. The mage on the right stamp is the haiku in calligraphy.

If anyone can help or point me in a direction where I can find more information, I would be most grateful.

Many thank,
Aquinas

Try Google Translate and choose "Image". Dropping an image of the left stamp gave this translation:
"The birds and fish have tears in their eyes as spring passes"

No result on the right stamp.

Is it accurate? I don't know. We do have a few members who can read Japanese, if they see this they may be able to help.

Thanks, Germania. That's most helpful. With the information about google translate/image, I should be able to track down the haiku--twenty of them all told on the 20 pairs of stamps in the series. Best, Aquinas
