Hello everyone!

I have a little question about re-entries. Of course, a re-entry is caused by a misaligned transfer roll on to the plate. A RE-entry means the design of a stamp on the plate have been entered again. But why would it be entered again? To clear some defects on the plate? Or something else?

Any explanation would be appreciated,

CS

To clear some defects on the plate.

In the first ever case of re-entry, all 240 impressions of Plate 1 of the Penny Black became worn very quickly (because the plate wasn't hardened before printing) and were re-entered, which is why we have Plate 1a and 1b.

Note that sometimes the transfer doesn't have to be misaligned for a re-entry to be detectable. The impression may simply be deeper.
