So I'm back at my great grandfathers collection and it's almost paralyzing looking at everything, it seems inconceivable that one man could do this, it is such an incredible collection. I need help on finding some value here so that I can continue to upkeep this collection and continue to evaluate and keep it alive. I'm not sure how this will go but any suggestions will help. Naval covers/first flight/exhibition/national park/Christmas seals/special events/anniversary/space deep freeze/countries. Any pictures that one might feel like seeing just tell me and I will do my part.
Thanks guys the knowledge is invaluable

Hello - I presume that this is from a Scott International "Big Blue" album, which was designed as a general album that omitted spaces for more expensive stamps. What you have here is typical of the average collection - the lower values of sets, without the stamps that carry more financial value. A good project for you to continue, if you were interested.

If you have a large worldwide collection, then you must obtain a catalog. If this is a Scott International album set, then the Scott Catalog will do just fine. You can get older copies very cheap, perhaps $10 per volume, maybe less. That's what I bought 5 years ago, the 6 volume copy of the 2012 catalog cost me roughly $60. Even though it's not current, it covers virtually all the stamps I have and values probably aren't much different than today. Unless you get into specialization for individual countries, the Scott catalog will be adequate. For me, I don't care about value, I used the catalogs to help with identification.

13 volumes of international Scott big blues. Unfortunately value is a concern since this collection is very large, just to house this cost. I wish value had no place but that just isn't realistic right now for me.
It's not just the international big blues it's extensive, first days, and everything. It's just a matter of putting these in better boxes and making sure that the elements don't do what they do

I had a similar number of volumes. I remounted everything from 1840 to about 1960 on Steiner pages. The catalogs helped me validate the identity of the stamps. If I want to determine approximate value, I can, but it's just not important to me.

The reason I remounted the stamps is because I have many many more than the spaces in the old 1840 -1940 album and the pages in the albums I had were very old, acidic, and just in bad shape. The Steiner pages are more comprehensive and helped better organize what I have.

If I am understanding you, you are interested in continuing to add to this wonderful collection only if there is some value to it. From what I have seen and your comments about FDCs and various special event covers, the resale value is not that great. However the sentimental value is very large. If you feel that you have the time (many years, decades) and the money (minimal to quite a bit, depending on what you buy), then keep it going, by all means. And be sure to thank your great grandfather in your own way for every day of enjoyment that it gives you.

If you are looking for Scott catalogs, I suggest you check the local libraries. Mine replaced their 20xx set with a newer one and put the old set into their annual book sale. I got the set for $1 per book (Paperback cover price). Since your collection is older stamps, no need to get a new set of catalogs for identification purposes, plus older sets had fewer volumes. Saves on shipping charges.

Thanks guys, it's surprisingly synchronous how things develop when you put your stamps as a priority. Things tend to work.
