Ive probably asked this before , but.... I have what I think is SG 147, Great Britain. But to me it does not look grey. I cannot tell the Wmk due to hinge remnant & perfin and do not want to soak. Question - do plate numbers listed for one listing apply to the following listing if none are listed? For instance, Great Britain SG 145 lists plate 13. SG146 lists none. SG147 lists many ( 13 - 16). So are both SG145 & SG146 plate 13 only?

Looks grey to me. It also looks like it is eaten up with toning - keep this thing away from the rest of your collection

"Pl. 16, grey, SG147"

145 is Pl. 13. 146 has multiple plates.

Pl. 17 had less than half the print run of the others, hence the higher price.

I guess that is my question - how does one know SG146 has multiple plates when there are none listed for that item?

1. It is grey and heavily toned as pointed out by Petert4522.
2. That listing is confusing. The Specialised Vol. 2 lists SG 146 - 147 for all plates 13 - 17. From the listing, it was first issued in (deep) grey on 20 March 1874. They also exist in a slightly cheaper grey. The plates, cheapest colour, are 13 - 17. At some point, a deep grey stamp from plate 15 was overprinted "specimen."

To know, you need the Specialised catalogue. Concise is as it is called.

I am afraid there is more bad news. This stamp should have a wing margin. It has been cut back and reperforated on the lefthand side.

From p. 179 spec cat. ed. 16....

The stamps with "wing margins" are the watermarked Emblems and Spray of Rose series (3d., 6d., 9d., 10d., 1s. and 2s.) with letters D, E, H or l in S.E. corner, and the watermark Garter series (4d. and 8d.) with letters F or G in S.E. corner.

My ' I ' is in SW corner.

You are correct and I should have known better. Those perforations, however, look suspicious in the corners. Some look angled instead of rounded.

All good! No worries. For me not doing this on a ver very regular basis and with the same issue generally, it's a lot to try to remember. Thats why I always have to ask. Anyway, thank you. And seeing as I never heard back on the toning being contagious , cleaning, etc., I tried a little cleaning with ammonia solution myself. Before left top & bottom & after cleaning , right top & bottom. Not a big difference , but noticeable.

Thank you. Having never tried this before with amonia, I knew not what to expect. Unexpectedly pleased.
