History of France, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris and issued by France on October 28, 1968:

Philip IV (1268 – 1314), called Philip the Fair (French: Philippe le Bel), was King of France from 1285 to 1314. By virtue of his marriage with Joan I of Navarre, he was also King of Navarre as Philip I from 1284 to 1305, as well as Count of Champagne.

Bertrand du Guesclin (c. 1320 – 1380), was a Breton knight and an important military commander on the French side during the Hundred Years' War. From 1370 to his death, he was Constable of France for King Charles V.
The stamp design is after a painting by Jean Fouquet ( c.#8201;1420–1481) shows the death du Guesclin at Châteauneuf-de-Randon while on a military expedition:

Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc, c.#8201;1412 – 1431) is a patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orléans and her insistence on the coronation of Charles VII of France during the Hundred Years' War. Claiming to be acting under divine guidance, she became a military leader who transcended gender roles and gained recognition as a savior of France.
The stamp shows Jeanne d'Arc left Vaucouleurs with a small escort provided by Robert de Baudricourt, beginning her journey to her leading French forces during the Hundred Years' War.

François-René de Chateaubriand (1768 – 1848) was a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian who influenced French literature of the nineteenth century. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. In an age when large numbers of intellectuals turned against the Church, he authored the Génie du christianisme (The Spirit of Christianity) in defense of the Catholic faith. His works include the autobiography Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe ("Memoirs from Beyond the Grave"), published posthumously in 1849–1850.

Chateaubriand and scenes from his famous books, designed by Pierrette Lambert and issued by Monaco on December 12, 1968:

Chateaubriand, based on the painting "Chateaubriand Meditating on the Ruins of Rome" (ca.1810s) by Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson, engraved by Michel Monvoisin:

The French engravers always did outstanding work on Saar stamps.

Here is Dürer's Praying Hands on Canada's 1966 Christmas issue.

Yves Baril engraved the picture and Gordon Mash engraved the lettering.
Canadian Bank Note Co was the printer.

CANADA 1966
Scott 451 & 452

Baril did a pretty good job but no comparison to Mazelin.
Then again the Canadian stamps where a much smaller size.

Quote:
Devota (French: Sainte Dévote) is the patron saint of Corsica and Monaco. She was killed during the persecutions of the Roman Emperors Diocletian and Maximian because she decided to devote herself fully to the service of God.

After her death, her body was placed on a boat bound for Africa, believed it would receive proper Christian burial there. However, a storm overtook the boat. A dove appeared and guided the boat to present-day Les Gaumates, today part of the Principality of Monaco.

The celebration of Saint Dévote corresponds to one of the oldest traditions of the Principality of Monaco. Celebrations take place every year on 26 and 27 January. This tradition is a big part of Monaco's national culture.
