This March 1, 1988 stamp of Ireland celebrates "The Impact of Irish Abroad" and shows Robert O'Hara Burke and the route of the 1860-1 Burke and Wills Expedition.

From Wikipedia, It consisted of 19 men led by Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills with the objective of crossing Australia from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpenteria in the north, a distance of around 3250 kilometers (approx.2000 miles). At that time most of the inland of Australia had not been explored by non-indigenous people and was largely unknown to European settlers."

Burke died shortly after the conclusion of the expedition.
