Indonesian stamp shows one of 12 Soviet built Whiskey-class submarines delivered to Indonesia. The declining relationship between Indonesia and the Soviet Union in 1965 led to a spare parts crisis in the Navy, which affected submarines. To maintain an operational force, the Indonesian Navy decommissioned several submarines and used their parts to repair the remaining vessels. Since then, the number of the Navy's submarines declined steadily. The last remaining Whiskey-class submarine, KRI Pasopati (410), was decommissioned on 25 January 1990 and now serves as a submarine museum in Surabaya. During the India-Pakistan War in 1965, president Soekarno sent two of the Whiskey Class submarine (RI Nagarangsang & RI Bramastra) to help Pakistan guarding the Pakistani eastern waters. Maj. Gen Soeharto (later known as 2nd Indonesian President), chief of Trikora campaign for West Papua, inspects submarine in 1962. |
