In the early part of the 20th Century this ship served as the Royal Yacht HMY Alexandra. Sold to Norway in 1925 and used by Commercial interests until it was called into service during WWII. On June 9, 1940 it became a casualty of war after being bombed by German aircraft.

This cover was passed down from my great-grandfather. It has a sad story. The Scottish-built SS Wairarapa was sailing between Sydney and Auckland when she sank off Great Barrier Island on October 29, 1894 with the loss of about 130 passengers and crew. Some of the mail bags the ship was carrying were salvaged and the letters were dried out and forwarded to their destinations. This one was posted in Melbourne on October 20 and received in Auckland on November 10 and in Wellington three days later. The stamp was naturally soaked off while the mail bag was underwater!
