Gibraltar 2020, on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rosalind Franklin. Rosalind Franklin was the unsung hero of the DNA story. It was her X-ray crystallographic photograph 51 that was surreptitiously shown to James Watson by Maurice Wilkins that led Watson to understand the helical nature of the DNA molecule. Watson later gave credit to Franklin, but she went to her early grave (1958), not knowing the important role she played in one of the most important scientific discoveries of the 2oth century. There are two books that tell her story, Rosalind Franklin and DNA by Anne Sayre and Rosalind Franklin, the dark lady of DNA by Brenda Maddox. |

Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov (1887 – 1943) was a Soviet agronomist, botanist and geneticist who identified the centers of origin of cultivated plants. He devoted his life to the study and improvement of wheat, maize and other cereal crops that sustain the global population. Vavilov's work was criticized by Trofim Lysenko, whose anti-Mendelian concepts of plant biology had won favor with Joseph Stalin. As a result, Vavilov was arrested and subsequently sentenced to death in July 1941. Although his sentence was commuted to twenty years' imprisonment, he died in prison in 1943. In 1955, his death sentence was retroactively pardoned under Nikita Khrushchev. By the late 1950s, his reputation was publicly rehabilitated, and he began to be hailed as a hero of Soviet science. Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov, designed by Yuri Bronfenbrener, engraved by Viktor Starikovsky and issued by the USSR on November 25, 1987. |

DNA sequencing is the process of determining the nucleic acid sequence – the order of nucleotides in DNA. It includes any method that is used to determine the order of the four bases: AGCT. The advent of rapid DNA sequencing methods has greatly accelerated biological and medical research and discovery. The first major sequencing methods were developed in the 1970s by Frederick Sanger and Allan Maxam & Walter Gilbert. Sanger sequencing, based on the chain termination method using dideoxynucleotides, became the dominant technique due to its efficiency and accuracy. Maxam-Gilbert sequencing, which relied on chemical cleavage of DNA at specific bases, was less commonly used due to its complexity and use of hazardous chemicals. Today, next-generation sequencing (NGS) has largely replaced these methods for high-throughput applications. This stamp, issued by Australia on July 8, 2003, was already posted in page 1 of this thread but I found it with tab shows DNA sequencing analysis using Sanger method. |

Malaria Virus? well, malaria is an infectious disease caused by unicellular parasite Plasmodium, not by a virus. This is what happen when you give a foreign agent permission to design and issue your stamps! Any way, this "newly discovered" virus has DNA double helix. Same design of the DNA appears on the upper right corner of the SS. |
