Where can I learn the plating?
Does stamp smarter have a resource?
Are there any good reference books to guide me?

Hello Laurie,

You can download the Chase book on the 3-cent stamp for free at the first link below;

This one is Scott #11A position 28R3. Three nice margins.

Features:
- Relief B
- Two Inner Lines
- Guide Dot at lower right (hidden under the cancel)

I should have ruled out plate 1L right away, but I didn't, so it took me a while to find this one. It was the 174th stamp in the search.

Looks like the cancel might be BROOKLYN, NY?. If so, it's nice to have something other than NEW YORK, NY for a change.

This one is Scott #11A position 16R1L.

Features:
- Two inner lines
- Top of right diamond block is gouged
- Top right of top label is gouged
- Left outside frame line goes up over top frame line
- Bottom right corner isn't quite square
- Frame lines and strong
- Top frame line is very thin
- Relief A (only known after finding a match)

Because of the gouging and strong lines, this had to be plate 1L. I could not tell the relief due to the cancel obscuring things. Didn't take too long to find the match for the top corner, top frame line, bottom corner, gouging, and inner line spacing.

This one looks to be Scott #11A position 76L1L.

Features:
- Relief A
- Two inner lines
- 1 line recut in upper left triangle
- oddly shaped upper left diamond block
- strong frame lines

Wasn't sure if this could be plate 1L, so I searched 2L, 3, and 5L first, but no luck. Sure enough, this wound up being plate 1L. Perhaps this is one of the two stamps on this plate that isn't gouged out? Found a really good match on the upper left diamond block shape and the curve of the to frame line where it narrows after the P all the way through the middle of the G.

This one should have been easy because of the upper right guide dot is in a position that should be easy to match. However, I couldn't decide between 7L2 and 9L2. I settled on Scott #11A position 9L2L.

Features:
- Relief B
- Two inner lines
- Upper right guide
- Just cannot be orange brown

Note: According to stampplating.com, this is supposed to be a double transfer. I don't see any shift on the reference stamp or my stamp. What am I missing?

I'm embarrassed to show this stamp. It is so very awful. Missing 3 sides.

However, I think I plated it correctly as Scott #11A position 9R1L.

Features:
-Relief B
-Upper right guide dot
-Not orange brown

Not having any left, right, or bottom frame lines, the searching and matching was limited to the guide dot, spacing of the top frame line, and the splotches of color that show at various points across the top of the stamp. There is a blur above the top left diamond block and a bump of color between the P and O. There is color impinging on the bottom left corner of the O and also on the G. I'm guessing this is why this is listed as a double transfer? Anyway, my stamp matches pretty well with the Chase image with respect to all the blurs, bumps, and impinging color.

This one has the top label, top right diamond block, and right frame line joined. It's only visible under microscope. Combine that with Relief B and not an orange brown, there are only 3 positions to choose from. Other features are the thin outside right frame line where it touches the bottom right rosette and the thinning of the left outside frame line near the top.

This must be Scott #11A position 99R2L.

New additions. Hopefully the green cancel is genuine (looks to be SALISBURY, but it's not clear which state as there is more than one). The one in the center should be #10 position 3R1i. I'll give these a closer look later.

Here's the full size image of the green cancel (it's most definitely SALISBURY as there is no trace of any other parts of a letter, such as T).

I spent quite a bit of time trying to plate this one. I'm kind of stumped.

It shouldn't be difficult. It is most certainly a Scott #11A, relief A, and it's likely from plate 2L or plate 3 because of the straight lines in the top label and top right diamond block. I ruled out plate 1L because the top label and top right diamond block don't show signs of gouging and I ruled out plate 5L because the inner frame lines are not weak.

The best match I could find is 51R3, but the left frame line from the bottom of the upper left rosette to the top frame doesn't look quite right.

I agree that the cancel does not match Saltsburg, although initially I was tempted to think it was from there. Saltsburg has a well-known true green very attractive cancel, and at first glance, this looks like it. But I agree that it is not. For reference -
