I've been working on the few engravings of Richard Baratz and found a Gene Hessler reference to his work on US commemorative panels, but I can't seem to find the actual panels.

What I'm looking for is a commemorative panel with a picture of an olympic runner. This would most probably have been issued for the 1984 Olympics.

The second one which I can't find is a panel with a portrait of Martin Luther King. I have a picture of it.

Could anyone tell me which panels these are and which stamp issue they accompanied? Or maybe even be able to post a pic?

Hope so!
:-)
Adrian

There was a Martin Luther King Jr. issue in 1979, (Scott 1771).

Scott says the issue was designed by Jerry Pinkney, whose name I recognize as a prominent illustrator of children's books. He designed (and I believe drew himself), many of the African American Heritage series for the USPS.

But the pose is somewhat similar to what you show.

Thanks, yes' I've seen that one, but there's no King illustration like mine on the commemorative panel.

I suspect that, after more than a year, you may have found the panels you're looking for. But in any case, I just took a deep dive into my Commemorative Panels from the early 1980s. I was unable to find the MLK portrait you posted. I suspect it may have been engraved for the MLK panel but was not used.

As for the Olympic Runner, I think that one may have been mis-titled. There are two 1984 Olympic panels with what looks like Baratz's work. Both have athletes that appear to be running, at first glance. One is a soccer player on CP-192, the other is a discus thrower on CP-195. Hopefully this is helpful.
